There has been a huge outbreak of Canine Parvovirus in Pontiac and Inkster this summer. Up to 300 dogs in this area alone are expected to have died from the disease which is feared to be spreading to Flint and Michigan too.

The majority of the dogs who died either had not been vaccinated at all or had missed the final, essential, booster-shot vaccination. Some people who had the dogs as guard dogs were not able to afford the vaccination. This is particulary a problem in Inkster where incomes are normally low, and have been hit even worse due to the recession.

Canine Parvovirus is on the rise across America and much of the western world due to owner’s reluctance to vaccinate due to the recession. According to Palm Beach Post, the virus is on the rise because people feel that the vet is an unnecessary cost during the recession, and they cannot afford to take their pet to get vaccinated.

Outbreaks have been rising across America over the past year, with Florida and Mississippi facing particularly bad parvovirus problems.

It is always worthwhile to get your pet vaccinated. Anything to stop the spread of this terrible virus is very important. Check out our page on preventative measures for more information about how to prevent your dog getting infected.

An outbreak of the parvovirus in an animal shelter in Suffolk forced it to close for 2 weeks. It has just reopened after the outbreak was seen spreading around the shelter and making them sadly need to euthanize 12 dogs. It is a very sad example of how quickly the parvovirus can spread, and how seriously it needs to be taken. It is not the first outbreak in the area either, and comes after a few months previously leading veterinarians claimed that parvovirus was on the increase in the United States.
